was born in 1955, but Isgro's had been a tradition
in our home long before I was born. My mother's
family was born and raised on Mildred Street.
I have pictures of every occasion from my first
birthday to my wedding 20 years ago and beyond.
An Isgro cake, cookies or cannoli is always right
there with us in the picture. I have so many special
memories about Isgro's, but one stands out in
my mind….When I was a child, my dad owned
a grocery store at 13th and Packer. He was very
friendly with Frankie Avalon and his family. During
the time when Frankie Avalon was a rising star
and it was all very exciting, my Aunt Marie, who
was then a teenager, came to stay with us for
a few days hoping to catch a glimpse of this famous
and handsome hometown boy. What she didn't know
was that my dad had a few tricks up his sleeve.
It was March 13, my mom's birthday and of course
there was going to be an Isgro birthday cake.
My dad planned for Frankie Avalon to deliver the
cake to our home. There was a knock at the door
and Aunt Marie was asked to open the door. When
she did, low and behold there stood none other
than Frankie Avalon himself, and there Aunt Marie
fainted. Of course no one expected that reaction,
and it wasn't very funny then, but we sure do
enjoy a good laugh over it some 40 years later.

used to come with my grandparents at Christmas
time for cookies and pastries. Then, when my grandparents
passed away, my parents continued the tradition
of Christmas cookies. Now I have been doing my
own trip to Isgro Pastries since I married 28
years ago. So, I have been at this shop at Christmas
time for 51 years." |
